i got a call from YRB mag to do a very last-minute shoot with ryan dungey on the street in soho. it was his first time in nyc and he seemed pretty hyped to be here. dungey is pretty fancy on a dirtbike. he slays every race he enters and his victory list wouldn’t fit on one of those 82 page nyc diner menus. in fact, he became the first rookie in history to win both the premier supercross and national motocross titles in his inaugural season. to top it off, he led team USA to victory in the motocross of nations. motocross of nations! that sounds superbad, huh? well that’s because it is. and ryan crushed it.

“nah, punchin! punchin metal! i’ve been punchin metal for 17 years. i’ll punch that metal pole over there all day if you wanna take pichas! you wanna?”
“yes i do.”
meet johnny knuckles. mr. knuckles stumbled upon the art of metal punchery 17 years ago and the rest is history. he’s got an addictive smile and speaks his thick brooklyn accent with excitement. i’d be excited too if i was 75 years old and could still bang out more knuckle push-ups than most people a quarter of my age. well, given the sickly and lethargic state of lazy-america these days, i guess that’s not saying much. but even compared to the “healthy and energetic-america” standards of yonder-years, mr. knuckles is still holding his own. he must’ve done 20 push ups while i was shooting him. he even did some of the hard kind with the hands close together as his boombox was blazing some awesome 80′s jam that i promised myself i would remember but forgot.

thuy (pronounced “twee”) was born into a family in vietnam who ran a custom-made clothing shop and a tailoring school. she learned the ropes of tailoring as a kid and soon developed a love for fashion. now, in america, she continues the family tradition of finely-crafted clothes and expresses her love of fashion through her label “Thuy.” i recently shot thuy for the fall issue of YRB magazine and here are some of my favorite outtakes.

this girl is built like an exotic car. the kind that you know exist but you don’t really think about it till you see one in the wild – then you’re like “woah,” but you don’t want to stare too long because you don’t want the owner to think you’re gawking so you kind of look away with a “whatever” look on your face like it’s no big deal, but it’s only because inside you’re like “dude, that is NOT fair.”

the day before we were supposed to shoot, i got an email from tabitha saying that she had just gotten out of the hospital from some kind of bug or virus or whatever. she was all kinds of messed up for like over a week, but she was still on board so we made it happen – except we took things nice and slow and kept her topped up with some un-nauseating goldfish crackers to keep her from passing out. we had a long day, but she stuck it out.

i got a voicemail from erin the night before we were supposed to shoot saying, “i’m having contractions today and i’m in a little pain, so i’m not sure how it’s going to work out for tomorrow…” that was kinda scary. but she ended up feeling better and we got some nice pictures. but dude, that baby was ready to come out. it was kinda rad because she was really still and it was pretty quiet on set, but she had a fully grown bundle of joy in her belly doing the Carlton Banks.
