bout 10 years ago these two dudes opened up a bike/skate park near my hometown in wilmington, nc called eastwood. one of the guys was don – he could do backflips on a scooter (and not a stupid razor scooter, but the real deal, big-boy scooters); and the other guy was dave, a nice guy who completely destroyed the park on his bike. and that was that. for weeks, maybe 6 weeks, he was just dave. some random destroyer. turned out that his name was dave mirra. and it turned out that dave mirra was a huge name in the bmx world. and it turns out that 10 years later his name is even huge-er. so when we met up, we had a little reminisce session about yesteryear and the old eastwood park in wilmington. it was good to catch up and i’m glad that dave is still destroying it.

dave was telling me that he was doing rally car races now and showed me pictures of his car.
when i first started skating i remember watching video of frazier killin the vert at the skatepark of tampa. and throughout the next 16 years, i’d bump into him at tampa, woodward or some random skate event in some random part of the country and the guy is still killin it. these days, me and frazier are both rocking the balding-buzz cuts with some scruff – so whenever i’m at woodward, there’s always 2 or 3 kids that come up to me as i’m skating by and ask if i’m mike frazier. i’ll say “yep” and sign their shirt. but i’ll actually sign it “maready rips!” and skate away. that’s a lie. well the last part’s a lie, anyway. last week when i was at woodward a campers mom asked me if i was mike frazier. i told her “sure am, can i sign your boobs?” see, that last part is a lie again. actually it was all a lie. it was really a camper’s dad and i never signed his boobs.
check out a few tidbits from the mike frazier legacy:
my shoot with kevin was fast and furious, but i snagged some rad shots. this guy is pretty much like wow. underneath that calm looking facade is a gymnastics machine that is ripped like some jeans in williamsburg.
jessica lopez has been a gymnast since she was 3 years old. that’s insane. i mean, when she was learning how to tumble, i was learning to color inside the lines. but all that training has paid off and has given her a laundry list of achievements, including going to beijing for the 2008 olympics. and my coloring still sucks.
