world cup 2010 in madrid
Posted by mareadyphotography in documentary, fitness/sports on August 3, 2010
so my friend monte isom is a photographer and he’s always got something up his sleeve. dude kills it behind the camera and his hustle skills are just as strong. on thursday the 8th of july i got a call from monte saying he had a plan in the works. the next day i was on a plane bound for the netherlands. after hanging with customs in amsterdam for six hours or so, and after BARELY making it through with our gear (that’s a crazy story within itself), i rendezvoused with monte and hung for the night. we chilled with some of monte’s rad amsterdam peoples and afterwards got some waves, winks and kisses blown at us while on a walking tour in the red light district.
instead of hookers, we got french fries. they were a lot cheaper and less likely to have STD’s. by that time it was like 2 am, and the women of the night would stroll in and out of the deli in-between clients to order their usual meals – and it totally made me giggly when one of the ladies ordered a hot dog. i got two hours sleep that night and the next morning i was on a plane to madrid. monte’s plan was to photograph the world cup fans in the public viewing areas. he would shoot in amsterdam, i would shoot in madrid and we’d put the pictures side by side to have a fans showdown. my plane landed in madrid and i went straight from the airport to the hotel – and then straight to the plaza de colon

yoga and belly dancing

i got a voicemail from erin the night before we were supposed to shoot saying, “i’m having contractions today and i’m in a little pain, so i’m not sure how it’s going to work out for tomorrow…” that was kinda scary. but she ended up feeling better and we got some nice pictures. but dude, that baby was ready to come out. it was kinda rad because she was really still and it was pretty quiet on set, but she had a fully grown bundle of joy in her belly doing the Carlton Banks.
if gumby was a super-hot girl, he would probably be kimberly snyder

i get a little de-motivated sometimes when i see somebody effortlessly do something that i know is crazy hard – but when i look at kimberly snyder do yoga it’s the exact opposite. i’ve seen kimberly do yoga a few times, and i know the poses she does are crazy hard to do, but she makes them look so tranquil and smooth that it’s really inspiring and motivating. like, it really makes me want to take time out of my day and do yoga. most days, i get so busy and caught up in photography that my personal hygiene takes a hit, my fingernails get long and i forget to eat and blah blah… basically what i’m saying is that kimberly makes me want to find time that i don’t have and do something good for my skateboard-battered/horribly nourished body. and speaking of nourishment, if you want to find out what kind of fuel she burns in her jet-fighter-like body, she shares her knowledge as a certified clinical nutritionalist in a health-and-beauty blog at kimberlysnyder.net. somethin tells me that my daily dose of those extra dark “le petit ecolier” cookies (is anybody else addicted to these things like i am?) are scarce found on the pages. but some tasty, less artery clogging options like cyan pepper immunity tea, kimberly’s raw pecan love pie, and banana soft serve with raw fudge sauce are all over that sucker. plus there’s tips on how to keep your skin, nails, hair and pretty much your whole body healthy. check it out.

this is my second time shooting with krissy. check out the first shoot HERE. she wanted a couple new shots for her book, and i wanted a shot for my fitness book, so we made it happen.

i think the running shot came out superbad. it was so cold i had to wrap krissy up in one of my big puffy jackets in between sets.

chris cole is pretty much amazing at skateboarding

years and years ago, back when i was on fiveboro – we were doing a demo at a skatepark in philly and there was this guy there who was completely annihilating everything. i was like, “yo, who is THAT?” and somebody said, “that’s chris cole.” i don’t think i’d ever seen anybody skate that consistently. he was like a machine that was pre-programmed to get awesome. that was probably 8 years ago? i’ve ended up skating around him a few times since and it’s still the same story. the dude’s dials go to 11.
photos of me

every now and then i get on the other side of the lens. here are some shots of me from this summer and the talented fellow photogs who make the magic:
you know how sampson lost all of his power after delilah cut off his flowing mane? well jeff brockmeyer used to have a long, flowing mane of dreadlocks – but after they got chopped, his camera skills are as good as ever. i’ve known him for ages and every shot this guy has ever taken has been crazy good. go to his site right now and check out his stuff at jeffbrockmeyer.com
bennett weinberg was a camper at woodward learning photography. his sensei, eli phillips (at elyphillips.com) was dragging him around the camp and they ended up near me. the crazy thing was that during the first few shots he took, i snapped 4 of the plies of my board (in this shot you can kinda see one of the plies sticking out a couple inches from the back truck). but 3 were still hangin on hard so i kept at it knowing that my board was going to explode and i was going to end up a twisted pile of wreckage at the bottom of the ramp. never did. yay cape fear skateboards for making crazy strong decks.
robert burch (at robertburchphotography.com) grabbed a couple shots that came out nice

renton millar

the guy is pretty nuts. i walked up to the top of the 13 ft vert ramp and saw renton pop an 8 ft no-handed frontside air like it was nothin. dude’s got mad tech tricks, too. he showed me the playback screen of a tiny camcorder and it was his feet on the board doing a kickflip 5-0 on some coping and it was kind of hard to read cause it was just feet and a board, but it looked SUPER ILL. i asked, “when’d you film that?” he said, “that was my last run.” he was holding the camera pointed at his feet and it didn’t throw him off a smidge. that’s pretty nuts, right?

mike laird

couple years ago i was a carnie in the alaska state fair. well, kinda. i was skateboarding in keith king’s bmx stuntshow for 3 or 4 shows a day for almost two weeks, i think. that junk was fun, man. they were long days, but man they were fun. after a long day of shows, we’d all go back to our cabins and sit by the campfire till the wee hours then wake up and do it again. mike laird was one of the crew. the guy rips. he’s got such a smooth style. he kept to himself a lot, but never failed to throw in a zinger to make fun of the girls that some of the crew dragged to the campfire that night. he’s a genuine kind of guy, and i like that about him. no frills and no fake smiles or any of that bullcrap. you can even BE mike laird if you play any of the dave mirra video games. creepy. mike still rides for mirraco and you can check out his profile HERE. turn up the slayer.
- mike was the keeper of the fire pretty much the whole time. jaren grob, mike laird, alex johan
- mike, scooter don and jeremy fanberg.
- i dug up some snaps of the fair from the archives. this is the crew under our bigtop tent: jeremy fanberg, keith king, jaren grob, matt , mike laird, scrapbook girls, scooter don wigent, me
shawn johnson

shawn was crazy easy to shoot. i mean, most times i end up looking through the photos at the end of a shoot to see which ones are usable, then i make my selects from those. but with shawn, every time the shutter opened it was a winner. and that pretty much how it’s been for shawn lately – she just can’t stop winning. she nailed down the gold on balance beam in the 2008 olympics in beijing (check out the standing backflip full twist at 2:07 – holy moly!) and just won dancing with the stars. that’s pretty much a big deal. especially when you have all that under your belt before 18. when i was 18, i was living out of a VW bus eating little debbie snack cakes and drinking half-and-half out of the carton.
check shawn’s website HERE
and her twitter HERE
- this kinda reminds me of that picture of drew barrymore from “firestarter.” except a lot less evil. and less windy. and.. ok, it’s nothing like it. but kinda.
- earlier in the day shawn went riding horses and got caught in a rain storm. got soaked to the bone. before we took these shots i asked to to throw on some jeans, so she did. after the shoot she told me the only jeans she had were the ones that got soaked. she wore cold wet jeans and never complained once. what a trooper.
- she likes to laugh and i like that. it’s a giggly and sincere laugh. it’s like… idunno – laughy.
- yowza

bmx king dave mirra
Posted by mareadyphotography in fitness/sports on August 17, 2009
’bout 10 years ago these two dudes opened up a bike/skate park near my hometown in wilmington, nc called eastwood. one of the guys was don – he could do backflips on a scooter (and not a stupid razor scooter, but the real deal, big-boy scooters); and the other guy was dave, a nice guy who completely destroyed the park on his bike. and that was that. for weeks, maybe 6 weeks, he was just dave – some really nice random destroyer. turned out that his name was dave mirra, and it turned out that dave mirra was a huge name in the bmx world. and it turns out that 10 years later his name is even huge-er. so when we met up for our shoot, we had a little reminisce-session about yesteryear and the old eastwood park in wilmington. it was good to catch up and i’m glad that dave is still destroying it.
check out dave’s site HERE
dave was telling me that he was doing rally car races now and showed me pictures of his car.
