thuy (pronounced “twee”) was born into a family in vietnam who ran a custom-made clothing shop and a tailoring school. she learned the ropes of tailoring as a kid and soon developed a love for fashion. now, in america, she continues the family tradition of finely-crafted clothes and expresses her love of fashion through her label “Thuy.” i recently shot thuy for the fall issue of YRB magazine and here are some of my favorite outtakes.
the day before we were supposed to shoot, i got an email from tabitha saying that she had just gotten out of the hospital from some kind of bug or virus or whatever. she was all kinds of messed up for like over a week, but she was still on board so we made it happen – except we took things nice and slow and kept her topped up with some un-nauseating goldfish crackers to keep her from passing out. we had a long day, but she stuck it out.

if you’ve never been to the desert before, i have three words for you: PRICKLY – PEAR – CACTUS. it was pretty obvious that neither me or my assistant had ever spent much time in desert-like conditions because within 30 seconds of getting to our location, we were covered with cactus needles. big ones, small ones, heat-seeking ones… holy moly. the first one to REALLY get me was mr. prickly pear himself. i felt a nice jab in my ankle and i looked down to see a happy little ball of death spikes hanging from my leg. when i tried to pull it out, i got stabbed about 27 times in my fingers. i walked around to find a pair of gloves and it just dangled from my ankle like some gothic christmas tree ornament. when i got the gloves i tried to pull it slowly, but it just pulled my skin with it (like if you pinch your skin with your fingers and pull it). so i snatched it out real quick-like, and the cute mace-like ball was replaced with a dull burning sensation pretty much all day. that was the first round in a long, heated fight with the desert landscape. later i was shooting and my assistant yelled “yowwwwwwww!!” i looked over at him and he said with big eyes, “man, i just bent down and sat on a cactus.”

sometimes you’ll see someone who’s not a model on a set and you’re like, ” dude, why aren’t THEY in front of the camera?” that’s pretty much how nicole got her start. she was a makeup artist/hair stylist and eventually somebody told her she was on the wrong end of the camera. good thing, too – cause she’s pretty awesome at modeling.

turns out that one of my favorite makeup artist guys is also a girl – well, sorta – he’s a drag queen. and not only is he a drag queen, but he’s a drag mother with a family of protege drag queens to whom he teaches the ways of femininity and how to be excessively fabulous. he called me up and asked me if i’d take a few shots of his drag family, so i was like, “sure, bring em over to my apartment and i’ll help you out” and figured i’d bang out a quick little shoot and call it good. they showed up and started to get ready – they were in that room for FOUR hours. holy schmoly. no detail was spared. when jezzeniah and her crew came strutting out in a cloud of hairspray, glitter, skin bronzer and sequins, the fabulousness was excessive and the femininity was flowing in true-drag style, complete with angry complaints about the heels – enough to make a drag mama proud.
i moved schools twice when i was growing up, and both times i was expected to know stuff at my new school that my last school had yet to teach. i remember showing up halfway during the year in 4th grade and my new class was having a multiplication bee (kind of like a spelling be) and i felt super stupid because my last school hadn’t started learning multiplication tables yet – so i’d just spout out some random number to get it over with then sit down acting like i tried. the next subject to suffer because of another move was geography. i never learned where stuff is. my former school had yet to teach it, my new school had already taught it. so i just never learned it. is it the schools’ fault for having different teaching schedules? course not, it’s MY fault for not having the initiative to learn it after the fact. but, nevertheless and notwithstanding – i still never learned my geography, including that stupid song about the states and capitals that pierces my heart every time i hear it. the way i learn geography is from the maps on airplane TVs. my first time out west i had no idea where oregon was until i saw it on a map halfway across the states. i learned where japan was when i saw it on the TV en route to tokyo. “where is ireleand?” you ask? well i could have told you right after i saw it on the airplane TV as we were leaving JFK. i usually pay pretty close attention to the maps, but for this trip the plane was kind of gangster and didn’t have individual TVs in front of every seat, but had community TVs and the one closest to me wasn’t easy to look at – so i didn’t. because of it i didn’t even really bother to see where barcelona was. i really don’t mind not know where places are. i kind of like the novelty of it all. it’s like every trip is a little surprise. as it turns out on the airplane TV map on the flight home, barcelona is in spain – and that’s underneath france. has been for a long time.
my makeup artist friend damion wanted to shoot some beauty with one of his male model friends named george, so i was down. last minute he was like, “i think i have a female model coming too. we’ll have them do some doubles.” i was like, “ok, cool. what are we doing for wardrobe?” and he was all, “i think we’re just going to throw them in the tub.” so that was that. BUT, as models are want to do for tests, the female model bailed. i called a model friend of mine and was like, “hey christine, so what are you doing like – right now?” turned out she was down to shoot, so she rolled out and completely crushed it. thanks, christine.
here are some shots of nicole from a few months back that i never posted.

sometimes i talk to myself while i’m shooting. like, i’ll mumble stuff about my camera settings and whatever. but not only is katherine an amazing model, she’s also handy with the camera and knew exactly what i was mumbling about, so i had to be on my toes not to mumble too much – or if i did, i had to make sure it wasn’t anything dumb. she totally killed it – and then after our shoot, she broke out her cammy and made me model for her. that was a first. check out my debut below. you can see more pictures of katherine, her photography and her writings on her website at iheartkat.com.
this is my second time shooting with krissy. check out the first shoot HERE. she wanted a couple new shots for her book, and i wanted a shot for my fitness book, so we made it happen.
