i snuck down to my hometown beach, Topsail (pronounced Tops’l) Beach, where i hung with family for a spell. there was an awesome lightning storm passing through one night and i grabbed my camera to snap a couple frames.
i came back inside and sat for a while and as the storm moved on through i set up a little time lapse. it wasn’t fully thought through. i should have done it from the very beginning, and there are a couple glitches where i had to make some adjustments – but ease up on me, dude – it was late and i was on vacation. gosh.
lightning at topsail beach

legend has it that blackbeard, stede bonnet and the likes would hang in the marshes of north carolina waiting to attack ships. if the merchant ships were lucky enough to see the top sail of a pirate ship peeking over the tops of the live oak trees, they’d hightail it to safety. i spent a lot of time at topsail beach as a kid during the summers. never saw any pirates, but i got ambushed by an angry crab one time. i was walking in a foot or so of water and it locked onto my toe; i screamed like a girl, flung my foot out of the water and ol’ captain pinchy fingers went flying through the air as i hightailed it back to mama and cried. oh, by the way — topsail isn’t pronounced “top-sail.” it’s “tops’l.” if you go there and call it “top-sail” the locals will roll their eyes and think you’re an idiot as they gladly accept your yankee dollars.
caroline in ft. lauderdale

whilst caroline and i were shooting in ft. lauderdale we met a guy named kevin. he looked like jeff goldblum and was an auto mechanic genius. the guy was just happy about life and about what he was doing. he just seemed happy. he wasn’t a movie star, he wasn’t mega-rich – but he was happy. i told caroline that in my mind that guy won at life. seems like i get so caught up in trying to constantly progress that after my accomplishments i never really take time to be content with what i’ve done. and while my relentless pursuit of doing bigger and better things will never stop – it’s nice to have things put into perspective every now and again. even though i’m looking into the future, i can still be happy with the present. thanks, kevin goldblum.
caroline has good reason to be happy. she’s not only smart as a whip, but she’s fairly easy to look at. you can see more of caroline HERE.

you know how on TV the secretary will take down her hair – and then, after shaking her hair in slow-motion, becomes a vixen? katherine villari can do that without the slow-motion hair shake. she can look innocent and sweet all the day long and the second i point the camera at her she turns on the sexy. it’s pretty fantastic.

katherine villari – hotter than miami

sometimes i talk to myself while i’m shooting. like, i’ll mumble stuff about my camera settings and whatever. but not only is katherine an amazing model, she’s also handy with the camera and knew exactly what i was mumbling about, so i had to be on my toes not to mumble too much – or if i did, i had to make sure it wasn’t anything dumb. she totally killed it – and then after our shoot, she broke out her cammy and made me model for her. that was a first. check out my debut below. you can see more pictures of katherine, her photography and her writings on her website at iheartkat.com.
- this is the polaroid from katherine’s shoot. i ended up taking my hair down and putting on her bathing suit.
lightning from my hotel room

i can’t say, “light-NING.” i grew up in the south, man. so if i ever say the “ing” part of a word i feel like i’m betraying my heritage. it’s always “lightin.” or “fishin” or “weddin.” that’s just the way it is. i mean, sometimes like if i’m in the phone with a customer support lady from india i have to say the “ing” cause she’ll have no idea what in the world i’m saying. i mean – sayin.
miami has had some ca-raaazy lightnin this week. this is from my room at the eden roc hotel.
