HBO Latino Entre Nos Comedy Show 1 of 2

HBO Latino is doing a two-part comedy show called Entre Nos and i got to shoot the key art and promo pictures. the show was at the El Portal theater in LA and i set up shop in the lobby (but thanks to the fire marshal we ended up moving and building the set two more times). the comedians were all on point, and of course they turned it up when they got in front of the camera so they were super fun to shoot.

i’ve always been fascinated with the concept of beauty and why people feel attractive or unattractive. one might feel attractive for having a particularly strong facial/bodily features, and another might feel unattractive for having the same features. as styles and fads come and go, the light by which we perceive ourselves is constantly flickering. it’s so wild to think about. in 2007 i decided to post ads on craigslist and some other online classified ad sites searching for people who felt ugly or unattractive who would be willing to let me interview them and take their photo. i interviewed and shot 4 people, but i ran out of free time and the project got buried under the massive pile of everything else in my brain. now, years later, i was digging through the mountain of stuff in my head and found the project. i changed the art direction a little and added video to the mix. now, finally i give you i am unbeautiful.

here are some pictures i recently shot for kitty hawk kites in the outer banks of north carolina. kitty hawk kites is kind of an amazing operation. they have a bunch of retail stores and provide a laundry list of activities, tours and adventures. wanna buy a superbad kite (or a cute ladybug kite for your kid)? no problem. wanna go kayaking? got it. wanna go jet-skiing? yep. wanna see some dolphins or wild horses? uh huh. wanna fly over 2,000 ft. in the air on a hang glider? easy greasy.

i had my little brother drive up and assist me on this job. when we were done, my brother wanted to come to nyc for a while, so i rented a car and we drove back together. after the long drive, i didn’t want to deal with nyc parking. when i saw this parking spot only a block away from my apartment, i went in for the kill. about halfway through the 96-point-turn, a guy walking by on the sidewalk said, “ain’t no way in hell you’re gettin in that spot.” guess he didn’t know how tired i was.

while we were shooting the first look, i asked asa (pronounced “asha”) if she would sing while i shot. she was quiet and a little shy, so i figured puttin her in her element might help her feel more comfortable. the second she started her song, everyone in the studio froze in their tracks like they were playing red light/green light, completely mesmerized. she has THAT kind of voice. i got some great pictures – and she got a new fan.

anna went on some kind of body cleansing detox to leach the toxins out of her body. it subsequently leached all of the energy out of her body – so we kept the shoot at a slow pace so she wouldn’t pass out. anna makes almost passing out look awesome.
will sheridan likes dudes

i got a call from espn.com to shoot will sheridan. will played basketball for villanova a few years ago and totally crushed it. the story we were shooting for was him announcing to the world he’s gay. and not like, “the flintstone’s song” kind of gay, but the “likes dudes” kind of gay. actually, he’s really happy – so i guess he’s both kinds of gay. will is a rad guy – real fun, easy goin and super easy to shoot. his new focus in life is music and he just released his first album, “ngoma.” the song “welcome to the jungle” is on ngoma and it’s been on loop in my head for the last 5 days. he has more music that’s gonna drop in the fall, so be on the lookout.

ryan dungey rules it

i got a call from YRB mag to do a very last-minute shoot with ryan dungey on the street in soho. it was his first time in nyc and he seemed pretty hyped to be here. dungey is pretty fancy on a dirtbike. he slays every race he enters and his victory list wouldn’t fit on one of those 82 page nyc diner menus. in fact, he became the first rookie in history to win both the premier supercross and national motocross titles in his inaugural season. to top it off, he led team USA to victory in the motocross of nations. motocross of nations! that sounds superbad, huh? well that’s because it is. and ryan crushed it.
